The humble punching machine hasn’t changed in years.
And yet, it’s still used every day—by students, office workers, and admin teams.
But we asked: What if that daily tool is causing more harm than we think?
Why This Project?
Our concepts focused on ergonomic comfort, simple interaction, and psychological ease.
We prioritized:
Clear button mapping and feedback (visual, audio, tactile)
Portable form with a protective flip-lid and built-in UV sanitization
A wearable device that stores easily inside the monitor itself
The Design Oppurtunity

This wasn’t just a product stuck in time.
It was an ergonomic nightmare hiding in plain sight.

Our user research revealed:

Concept Development
What if comfort was built into the form? We explored over a dozen sketch iterations, each pushing toward one idea: a punch that doesn’t feel like a chore.
Compact design with a flip-lid that doubles as a stand. Front-facing controls ensure easy use, while a built-in UV strip sanitizes the device when closed.
The wearable fits neatly inside the monitor for convenient storage and access.
Mock-up

Design gets sharper in 3D.
Using Fusion360, we translated the final form into a 3D-rendered prototype.
3D Modelling
Uneven Effort:
Men need less force, while women
use both hands
Hard to Punch:
Thick stacks require excessive force
Awkward Use:
Many punch in the air while sitting
causing instability
Too Noisy:
The loud sound is disruptive
Repetitive Strain:
Leads to discomfort and potential
injury
An ergonomically enhanced punching machine for everyday use. Designed to reduce effort, improve grip, and simplify motion.
STEMPEL
Rethinking the Act of Punching Paper.
Type: Team Project (Team of 4)
Time: 28 Hours
Tools: Fusion 360

A better punching machine that felt smooth to use, easier to grip, and satisfying to operate — for every kind of hand, posture, and pressure level.
